Color helps us regulate emotions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-are-fast-food-signs-red-2015-9#:~:text=The%20going%20popular%20theory%20is,while%20they're%20in%20there.\">read signs<\/a>, communicate ideas, and express ourselves. Wielding the power of color is important for our students. As art teachers, we know color is valuable because it&#8217;s one of the Elements of Art. Color theory takes color to another level. <a href=\"https:\/\/mymodernmet.com\/basic-color-theory\/\">Color theory<\/a> encompasses the principles of how color works and how to use color in different ways. It helps explain color mixing and how brands advertise. Teaching color and color theory year after year can get dry. Liven up your color unit with a few new artists to inspire both you and your students this year.<\/p>\n<h2>In the classroom, share these 10 artists with your students for a fresh perspective on color theory.<\/h2>\n<h3>Tint<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/huntington.org\/educators\/learning-resources\/spotlight\/tint-tone-and-shade#:~:text=TINT%20%E2%80%93%20A%20tint%20is%20any%20color%20mixed%20with%20white&amp;text=On%20a%20separate%20piece%20of,the%20paint%20and%20mix%20together.\">tint<\/a> is any hue mixed with white to make it lighter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/toah\/hd\/cmon\/hd_cmon.htm\">Claude Monet<\/a> used tints to highlight the pond, flowers, and water lilies in his painting, <a href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/asset\/waterlilies-claude-monet\/EQEY9dAnBaXfnQ\"><em>Waterlilies<\/em><\/a>. He eventually focused on the details in the pond, the reflection of the water, and the overall mood of the moving liquid and lily pads. Tints show the time of day he painted, where the light source may have been, and the delicate foliage. He sported a recognizable <a href=\"https:\/\/exhibitions.salvador-dali.org\/en\/dalismustache\/\">mustache<\/a> and a vast imagination. Escher, is one of the most innovative and iconic artists of his time. He used puzzles, tessellations, mind tricks, and optical illusions to create intricate, <a href=\"https:\/\/fenimoreartmuseum.org\/future-exhibitions\/escher\">photorealistic<\/a> artworks. In\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/articles\/37TqzKWSnwRR2dq1Z05Wnsn\/enigmatic-escher-early-works-by-the-artist-like-no-other\">Day and Night<\/a><\/em>, light values are on the left side and the deepest values are on the right side. If you don&#8217;t have a class set of cameras, students can use any device with a camera feature. Students can bring solid-colored items from home or have a selection of objects available in class. Students photograph their items from unique angles and viewpoints.<\/p>\n<h3>Analogous Colors<\/h3>\n<p>The colors next to each other on the color wheel are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/analogous-color\">analogous<\/a>. Analogous colors often <a href=\"https:\/\/uxplanet.org\/how-to-use-analogous-color-scheme-in-design-bf32d18ab05c#:~:text=Analogous%20color%20schemes%20create%20a,in%20nature%20and%20are%20harmonious.\">create<\/a> a harmonious and visually pleasant appearance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/entity\/josef-albers\/m01xf8t?hl=en\">Josef Albers<\/a> focused on geometric concentric shapes and color studies. His color studies explored how he could make one color look like many other colors based on the various hues around it. Albers dipped his toes in a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/cerberagallery.com\/portfolios\/josef-albers\/\">mediums<\/a> from printmaking to stained glass and painting. She creates paintings, sculptures, and animations of repetitive, colorful lines. Her most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artist\/jen-stark\">popular<\/a> artworks feature drippy, oozy, melty lines broken up with black and white designs. She also creates zig-zag and organic mandala <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenstark.com\/\">sculptures<\/a>. Stark\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/avantarte.com\/products\/dichroic-mandala#!\"><em>Dichroic Mandala<\/em><\/a> showcases a rainbow gradation of like colors next to each other. Start with three colors next to each other on the color wheel in the same color family, such as yellow, yellow-orange, and orange.
