Still, art education used to look very different 30 to 50 years ago. Sharpen pencils on a crank sharpener.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In theory, sharpening pencils is a great early finisher job for your art room\u2014except when you have to pause every two minutes to help your students unjam your state-of-the-art electric pencil sharpener! <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tjsmeltzer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Terri J. Smeltzer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> laments how she \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">didn\u2019t have to teach students how to use \u2018an old fashioned\u2019 crank sharpener.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 Sure, the new ones are efficient and convenient, but those metal wall pencil sharpeners are durable and easy to repair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Search through slides or transparencies for artwork reproductions.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you need to show a student <a href=\"https:\/\/gagosian.com\/artists\/rachel-whiteread\/\">Rachel Whiteread&#8217;s negative space houses and rooms<\/a>? No worries\u2014just pull it up on your laptop or phone with a quick internet search. But thirty years ago, things weren&#8217;t so simple. To reference artworks, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/erin.e.green.9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erin Eshelbrenner Green<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received a binder of transparencies to dig through along with her first set of new textbooks. You could only show students what you had in your stash of physical resources. Plus, many images were still in black and white! Printing transparencies in color was \u201cthe coolest thing ever\u201d back then, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/meaghan.k.oreilly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meaghan Kelly O&#8217;Reilly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. With just a few clicks or taps on a screen, you can peruse countless options, compare prices, and place orders within minutes. The copier spits out crisp, clean sheets and they are nothing like the \u201cpurple copies that were slightly damp and had a certain smell\u201d that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/annette.eberhardt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Annette Witte Eberhardt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> remembers from her days using a mimeograph machine. These duplicating machines forced ink through a stencil or transferred ink from a wax template to make copies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Teach Engaging Lessons<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>1. Visit the computer lab or library for research.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your students pull out their <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2022\/06\/jun-how-to-guide-students-to-be-responsible-digital-citizens-in-the-art-room\/\">tablets or Chromebooks<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to research contemporary artists. Within minutes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2022\/09\/sep-12-essential-understandings-to-improve-your-art-students-research-habits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they have a list of sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on their internet browsers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/heidilscolari\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Heidi Scolari<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> says, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen my students used to research an artist online, they couldn\u2019t just search by asking a question on Google&#8230; They had to do the research themselves!\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teachers like Heidi used to plan visits to dedicated spaces to allow students access to shared computers or printed resources for research purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Watch instructional videos via VHS tapes played on a cart TV.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you need to play a video to introduce the element of Line for your first graders? Pull up the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is Line? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">video from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/flex\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FLEX Curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and cast it onto your smart board. Thirty years ago, a similar activity would take much more planning. Develop photos in a darkroom or at a local convenience store.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tap. Snap. Repeat. The camera roll on your phone is full of hundreds of pictures and videos of your art room. You can edit and upload them to social media instantly with the press of a button. However, traditional photography requires an expensive camera, a precise chemical process, and patience to take and develop a single photo. They communicate with <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2022\/10\/oct-memes-entertainment-or-fine-art-how-to-use-memes-to-promote-learning-in-the-art-room\/\">memes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/podcasts\/simple-ideas-for-getting-started-with-digital-art-ep-197\/\">gifs<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2023\/08\/jun-july-8-reasons-art-teachers-should-use-tiktok-and-14-accounts-to-follow\/\">TikToks<\/a>. Referencing these pop culture phenomena makes you a definite G.O.A.T.! To be the real deal back in the day, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/VTScaper\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deb Mager Rickner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> says, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers were passengers in our Subway project.\u201d Commercials, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sitcoms, celebs, athletes, songs, and characters like these made the best fodder for references in the art rooms of the past. However, stay tuned because 90s and Y2K pop culture is making a comeback!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Run the Art Room<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>1. Record a mix tape to draw parallels between art and music.<i>\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Want to <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2023\/05\/music-and-visual-arts-parallels-part-two\/\">blast some music to help your students connect to a piece of art<\/a>? Cue up the song to stream to your speakers over Bluetooth to give your students an immersive experience. Hooking students with music in the art room once involved a bit more forethought. Submit attendance on paper at the end of the day.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of your students missed art again this week, but you know from checking your digital attendance system that they still have the flu. In an era before computerized systems, this information would not have been readily available. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/deanneconlon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deanne Conlon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no computers, no internet, and no phones,\u201d and she \u201ckept a paper grade book and attendance.\u201d Teachers like Deanne took manual records and submitted them to the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> office at the end of the day. No real-time updating and if you wanted a backup copy, you&#8217;d write it twice or use carbon paper!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Handwrite physical lesson plans and curriculum.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You pull up the next lesson in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/flex\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FLEX Curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and quickly review the supplies and resources you need to get ready during your prep period. Instead of using a computer to easily access digital done-for-you lesson materials, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/billyclaire411\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Billy Claire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> remembers, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI had to handwrite end-of-term comments and lesson plans.\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Veteran teachers rifled through filing cabinets of handwritten <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2023\/08\/aug-organize-art-lesson-planning-resources-like-an-expert\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stacks of paper and folders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to get the information they needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Turn in report cards on floppy disks at the end of the semester.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Writing individual feedback for hundreds of students will always be a daunting undertaking. However, most of us have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2022\/01\/jan-the-inequities-of-grading-how-to-assess-your-own-grading-practices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital gradebook systems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that allow for easy access, efficient storage, and automated report card generation. Walk down to the main office to call home.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of your more challenging students has really turned a corner in art class and you can\u2019t wait to let his people at home know! <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2021\/11\/nov-how-to-have-a-successful-conversation-with-parents-in-the-art-room\/\">How will you communicate this to them<\/a>? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You&#8217;ll most likely opt for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2021\/11\/how-and-why-you-should-track-communication-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an email or LMS app message<\/span><\/a>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You have a plethora of choices that don\u2019t require you to walk down to the main office, rifle through hundreds of family information cards, and then make the call for the entire office to hear. Phew!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Deliver professional communication by hand, snail mail, or fax.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/now\/\">NOW Conference<\/a>, you decide to write the featured presenter an email to see if they will collaborate with your class on a mural project. <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2023\/11\/nov-how-to-delegate-let-go-and-outsource-in-the-art-room-and-at-home\/\">Email is the reliable way professionals communicate these days<\/a>, but it didn\u2019t used to be. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BethyMilly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bethany Lynn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> learned a lot from her supervising teacher, however, she had to teach <em>him<\/em> how to send an email! W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dena.melldorchy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dena Mell-Dorchy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> first started teaching she says, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I wasn&#8217;t issued an email address.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Shocking!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3.
