
{"id":8393,"date":"2012-08-17T00:00:34","date_gmt":"2012-08-17T05:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aoeudev.wpengine.com\/2012\/08\/using-a-management-matrix-to-develop-and-set-clear-expectations\/"},"modified":"2023-03-27T13:56:57","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T18:56:57","slug":"using-a-management-matrix-to-develop-and-set-clear-expectations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2012\/08\/using-a-management-matrix-to-develop-and-set-clear-expectations\/","title":{"rendered":"Using a Management Matrix to Develop and Set Clear Expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When implementing your classroom management plan, do you ever hear, \u201cBut Mr.\/Mrs. So-and-So doesn\u2019t make me do that!\u201d or, \u201cThat\u2019s not how we do it in our classroom!\u201d As an art teacher, trying to keep up with twenty different sets of rules, while trying to enforce my own in the art room, is enough to make me want to hide in the teachers\u2019 lounge and never come out.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I\u2019m so excited about this upcoming school year.<\/p>\n<h3>For the first time at my school, each teacher will post a similar behavior matrix in his or her classroom.<\/h3>\n<p>Notice how I didn\u2019t say the <em>same<\/em> matrix. Of course, students are expected to do different things in their classroom than in the gym or in the art room. However, the core of these matrices will remain the same so that expectations are consistent for students throughout the school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5957 aligncenter\" title=\"Matrix copy\" src=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Matrix-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"590\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>I recently got together with my specials team to hash out what the matrix will look like for students coming to specials.<\/h3>\n<p>We felt it was important to meet as a team so that students would see consistent language and expectations across all of our subjects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is what we came up with. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GenericMatrix.doc\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5958 aligncenter\" title=\"Download Your Own Matrix to Personalize! \" src=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Screen-Shot-2012-08-14-at-9.31.53-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a>You can get a copy that looks like mine, but in <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/MatrixAOE.doc\">MS Word for you to personalize right here<\/a>.\u00a0If you\u2019d like to share this with classroom teachers at your school, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/GenericMatrix.doc\">download a more generic template here<\/a>. If you teach Middle School or High School, expectations might look different, but a matrix can still be helpful once you tweak it to fit your needs.<\/p>\n<h3>I love that the matrix clearly lays out what students are supposed to be doing during each part of class.<\/h3>\n<p>Our school rules are the &#8220;Brooklyn B\u2019s&#8221;: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be a Learner, Be Your Best. You can put your own school rules along the left edge. The top lists each part of art class. The matrix works like the game Battleship. For example, to see how to <strong>Be Respectful<\/strong> while <strong>Lining up<\/strong>, find where the two categories intersect to get the answer, &#8220;HFO (Hands, Feet, and Objects to yourself)&#8221; and &#8220;Stand Quietly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Here are a few notes about the language you see in the matrix.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0When creating the matrix, we made it a point to use positive language only.<\/strong><br \/>\nSo, instead of saying, \u201cDon\u2019t talk in line\u201d we chose to say, \u201cStand quietly.\u201d A positive statement gets better results, as it indicates exactly what the student is supposed to do, instead of ruling out what they are not supposed to do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>As part of our school-wide PBIS system, we have implemented the language HFO, which means \u201cHands, Feet, and Objects to yourself.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nWhenever a student isn\u2019t respecting another student\u2019s space, we just say HFO as a reminder. Quick and easy!<\/li>\n<li><strong>We are a \u201cbucket filling\u201d school.<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can learn more about this PBIS strategy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bucketfillers101.com\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even if you don\u2019t use the matrix in your classroom, filling it out can be a great way to work through your expectations for students during each part of art class. I plan to make my matrix into a big poster and hang it on my wall so that the students and I can reference it all throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>\u00a0Does your school have a school-wide set of rules?
